Britain also led the way in medicine and public health: from the first vaccinations to modern IVF (in-vitro fertilisation), which was pioneered in the UK, where the first "test-tube baby" was born in 1978. These discoveries come up because they show Britain's long record of science and innovation.

Ask what the British invented and the shortest honest answer is the foundations of the modern world. When the public voted on the greatest British innovation, the device that came out on top was the one imagined in a 1936 paper called "On computable numbers", written by the code breaker and mathematician Alan Turing. That single idea underpins every modern computer.

How did an 1865 British paper predict the existence of radio waves?
The existence of radio waves was predicted in an 1865 paper, "A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field", as the Intellectual Property Office's history of wartime innovation records. The prediction stayed on paper for years, until experimental work by German physicist Heinrich Hertz in the 1880s confirmed Maxwell's predictions.
The chain of ideas did not stop there. In 1904 a patent for "An obstacle detector and ship navigation device", based on the principles demonstrated by Hertz, was issued in several countries to Christian Hülsmeyer, a German engineer (GB10425608A). That work paved the way for British scientist Sir Robert Watson-Watt and his team, whose radar system entered service in 1938 under the code name Chain Home. One quiet mathematical paper ended up protecting an entire country.
What did British engineer Verena Holmes invent?
British engineer Verena Holmes invented a new valve for locomotives, patented as GB380198A. She developed it between 1932 and 1939 while working as a designer at Research Engineers Ltd, strengthening her reputation as an inventor at a time when few women worked in engineering at all.
Born in 1889, Holmes was a remarkable British engineer. Rather fittingly, her birthday on 23 June coincides with International Engineering Day, a celebration of the profession she dedicated her life to.
Why do we need an Innovation Strategy in the UK today?
The Innovation Strategy exists to keep Britain's inventive tradition alive. It sets out the government's vision to make the UK a global hub for innovation, and it backs that vision with concrete commitments rather than warm words. The headline pledge is to increase annual public investment on R&D to a record £22 billion.
The strategy is built on named pillars. Pillar 1 is about business: the government will fuel businesses who want to innovate. Pillar 2 is about people, making the UK the most exciting place for innovation talent. Pillar 3 covers institutions and places, ensuring research, development and innovation institutions serve the needs of businesses and places across the UK. For a country whose inventors gave the world so much, the strategy is a bet that the next chapter can match the last one.
