Life in the UK Test FAQ

The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based test about British values, history, traditions, and everyday life. You need to pass it when applying for settlement (indefinite leave to remain) or British citizenship.

You have 45 minutes to answer 24 multiple-choice questions at an official test centre. You must answer at least 18 correctly (75%) to pass.

Every question comes from the official handbook “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents” (3rd edition). It covers British values and principles, UK geography and culture, history, modern society, and government and law.

No. There is one current test, based on the 3rd edition of the official handbook, and it is the same wherever you sit it.

The official test fee is £50 per attempt, paid when you book. The fee is not refunded if you fail or miss your appointment.

Book online on GOV.UK at least 3 days in advance. The name on your booking must exactly match the name on your photo ID.

Bring the photo ID you booked with and your booking confirmation. Your name and details must match your booking exactly, or you may not be allowed to sit the test.

You are exempt if you are under 18, aged 65 or over, have already passed it, or have a long-term physical or mental condition confirmed by a doctor.

Yes. You may be able to get a reasonable adjustment, such as extra time, to help you take the test.

Yes, through your GOV.UK account, but you must give enough notice or you lose the £50 fee.

You get your result at the test centre on the day, as soon as you finish. If you pass, you receive a unique reference number to use in your application.

You can retake the test as many times as you need. There is no waiting period, so you can rebook as soon as you are ready, though you pay the £50 fee each time.

No. A pass never expires, so passing for your settlement application also counts for citizenship.

No. Settlement and citizenship also have a separate English language requirement (usually at B1 level), while the Life in the UK Test itself is taken in English.
